American Made Imports

When is a Japanese brand vehicle not an import?

The answer will probably surprise you. Most American made vehicles sold in the U.S. are Japanese brand cars and trucks, not iconic American brands.

Many Americans shopping for a new car or truck tend to gravitate to American brands for no other reason than they want to buy American. And there's also a threat of tariffs on imported vehicles looming under the current administration. Tariffs would lead to higher prices for consumers on imports. So if you want to buy one of the most American made vehicles on the road, you can't go wrong with something like a Ford F-150, right? There are a lot of great reasons to buy a Ford F-150. But the truth of the matter is, it's just the 13th most popular Made in America vehicle on the road today.

So where does all this information come from? From something called the American Made Index compiled by Cars.com. If you check it out yourself online, one of the positively eye- opening discoveries you'll make is that 9 of the top 15 vehicles made in America are actually manufactured by Toyota and Honda here in the USA by American workers using American made parts. They are:
Honda Odyssey
Honda Ridgeline
Honda Passport
Acura MDX
Honda Pilot
Acura RDX
Toyota Avalon
Honda Accord
Toyota Tundra
All of these American made Japanese vehicles are being built by American workers in places that include Alabama, Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri, Michigan, and Ohio.

Do these American workers do calisthenics at the beginning of the work day like their counterparts in Japan? We'll cover that at another time.
